In Schell v. Nell  17 Ind. 29 (Ind. 1861), a man made a promise to 3 friends that he'd give them $200 each.  They made a very elaborate written agreement, put it under seal, and exchange a penny.  He never paid the money.  However, the Court found that there was no bargained for exchange.
